Afro-Brazilian dance workshops at Espaço Cultural!
29th and 30th of January 2011

In the last weekend of January, Espaço Cultural is all about Afro-Brazilian solo dances. Dance teacher Clarisse Clark will give workshops in four different styles. The second day will be closed off with a movie she made, which is free to come watch for everyone.

The four dances that will be taught are:
Maracatu, a dance from the North East of Brazil which has its roots in the time of slavery. In Brazil, maracatu is danced in a parade.
Cavalo marinho, which consists of a variation of bumba-meu-boi. It is also from the North-East and is popular at parties and festivals.
Ciranda, in which the dancers hold hands and dance in a circle.
Coco de roda, a dance that takes place in a circle or in lines.

Clarisse Clark is from Rio and is a member of dancing collective Rio Maracatu. To find out more about her, visit www.riomaracatu.com
